The district of El Terreno and the Plaza Gomilla have long been the centre of Palma's gay life and in recent months a number of new bars and cafés have opened up around the Plaza. While many see this as a positive development and point to the model of the gay district of Madrid, Chueca, where gay gentrification have turned a previously seedy quarter into a vibrant, lively area, the head of the El Terreno Neighbours' Association says he doesn't want his district becoming a gay ghetto. While at pains to stress that his organisation has nothing against homosexuals, Àngel Domènech said he didn't want the district to become "labelled" as a gay barrio. Judging from the comments posted after the article in the newspaer, Diario de Mallorca, his is a minority voice.
