“I came to abstraction and formal painting fairly late and very slowly,” said the late Barcelona-born painter Joan Hernández Pijuan (1931-2005) and you might say he made up for lost time. During the 1970s, empty spaces gained an ncreasingly prominent place in his imagery and his works are filled with evocative, landscape-based imagery – uninhabited places, furrows, roads, trees and clouds. The exhibition This retrospective exhibition brings together 169 of his works on paper.
